I first met Jennifer in October of '97 at the World Championships of Performing Arts in L.A. I had a booth for my videos on Marketing Yourself. Jen was setup at another booth at the event's Trade Show. We met again when I was at Sac TV in my 3rd semester of Broadcasting & Reporting Instruction. Jen's a Model & Pageant Winner. She has so much terrific advice to give those who want to Model & Act. She's a blessing to Up & Rising Models. I know her advice will go to a Young Talent's heart. They are getting Words of Wisdom from a Lady that knows the Acting & Modeling Worlds.
Dawn: Hi Jennifer. We finally get to chat. What a busy lady you are! You're now married. I am so happy for you. Tell me what's been going on in your Life this last year? How is married Life: )
Jen: Things have been very hectic this year. I just got married in August to a wonderfully supportive man and I'm still recovering from the endless hours of wedding & honeymoon planning!! I'm also attending UCLA to complete my Master's and ultimately Ph.D. degrees in Art History. I'm constantly running to acting & modeling castings throughout L.A. Needless to say, I don't have much Free Time. Married life is great! We had a fabulous honeymoon in Tahiti & Bora Bora.
Dawn: I want to start out by letting all my readers know that YOU have a Video Series. Tell us more about it and also where people can Call or Write to get Info or Buy the video.
Jen: Yes, my first tape is called "Body Art: Basic Stretch One." It's a 30-minute stretch & relaxation routine concepted by the internationally recognized choreographer, Marisa Menkins. It's been featured on several morning talk shows & fitness magazines. I highly recommend it for anyone in the entertainment industry as an excellent tool to tone and define the body. I actually taught the class on the "Zero Effect" (Bill Pullman, Ryan O'Neal) movie set. Everyone loved it!! You can call Marjen Productions at (503) 760-7717 or send a check for $14.95 (plus $2.95 s&h) to: Marjen Productions, Inc., 4317 Alla Road, Suite 1, Marina del Rey, CA  90292. Also, you can check the PAPRO website very soon for more info about the video!!

Dawn: How did you start out as a Model & Actress?
Jen: I started modeling at age fourteen. I entered the John Casablanca's "Look of the Year" model search and was selected as a top three finalist from the Northwest. From there, I joined the top agency in Portland, Oregon and began booking jobs. The next year, I attended the IMTA (International Model & Talent Association) Convention in New York City and was selected to return the next summer to test shoot for American Models. I came home with some great photos for my portfolio!! I had several opportunities to work in Paris and New York but, decided that school was more important to me at that time in my life.
Dawn: What Height must one be to really be an active Model?
Jen: The MINIMUM for high fashion work is 5'-9". Of course, there are many commercial models that are under that height and petite modeling is another option.
Dawn: I have a story for Models under that Height on my Video series, as I was one of the Models under 5'-4". How did you start to Market yourself to get the Right Agent?
Jen: Well, at fourteen the agents were coming to me - I really didn't have to try to impress them. But, when I moved to L.A. I was 24 years old and had a much more difficult time securing a reputable agent. I sent my headshots & zed cards (5x7 modeling cards with headshot on front and 4-5 shots on back) to numerous agents. I bought a book called "The Agencies" at the Samuel French theatrical bookstore & read about each agent specifically. This was a great resource for me to find out exactly what each agent was looking for - the publication is updated every month so you always have the latest information at your fingertips. After one to two months of this I signed with an agency in L.A.
Dawn: Can you tell us some of the Work you have been doing?
Jen: I was selected as the image for all "Privilege" clothing stores. This means I was used in all posters in the store locations and also in the promotional mailers sent to customers. I also recently appeared on the cover of "Nailpro" magazine and have done numerous hand modeling jobs. I was a featured go-go dancer in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" and also am a 1940's nurse in the soon to be released feature film, "Pearl Harbor", with Ben Affleck.
Dawn: I want to tell the readers that you have been in Pageants. Can you tell us some of the Titles you have had?
Jen: I have been competing in pageants for many years. I was Miss Oregon USA National 1993, Miss Oregon American Coed 1994, Miss Los Angeles County USA 1998, and Miss Marina del Rey USA 1999.
Dawn: Any advice to Pageant Gals on what they need to know on how to do their best?
Jen: My best advice for competing in pageants is to be Yourself. Don't try to be what you think the judges are looking for because they will see through that "facade" very quickly. I have competed in many pageants and more recently I have judged pageants. I can tell you from sitting in the judge's seat - I want to see the real you. It's also very important to make yourself stand out during the interview competition. I was a judge at a very large pageant with over 100 contestants and after awhile everyone starts to blend together. Try to discuss something Unique, something that the other 99 contestants won't have already told me about. Perhaps an unusual hobby, talent or an interesting fact. Be Creative! And don't wait for the judge to ask you - be assertive & offer it yourself.
Dawn: Do you have an agent at this time? If anyone would like to book you for TV, Film, or Modeling, where do they call?
Jen: Yes, I have an agent. If anyone would like to book me they can simply page me directly at (310) 236-4846. (After all, if my agent didn't book the job for me I certainly don't need to pay them a commission!).
Dawn: Can you tell Young Talents real advice on how to keep going towards their Dream?
Jen: The most important thing is to Really Want It. This business is not easy. In fact, it's probably one of the most difficult fields to enter into. I say that because there is no definite schooling or diploma that will guarantee your success. You simply have to focus on the specific field that interests you and then never look back. It could be a matter of weeks, months, or even years before your dream is realized, but if you Truly Want It, it will become a reality.
Dawn: Is there anything else you would like to talk about to Talent?
Jen: I'd like to tell everyone pursuing a career in the entertainment field to follow their dreams. Equally important, is education. There is more time than you think in a day and it is possible to pursue your performance goal and continue your education too. You may have to juggle things and maybe miss a football game or homecoming dance ... the strength of your desire and commitment to your dream will determine how willing you'll be to sacrifice these things. And if you find that you don't want to sacrifice these things, that's OK. When I was fourteen I didn't want to either. I stayed in school & still remained committed to my goal is a less assertive way.
Dawn: If Pageant Directors would like to book you to Judge, are you interested?
Jen: I'm always very interested in judging pageants. I can be paged at (310) 236-4846 or faxed at (310) 745-1760.
Dawn: What do you think about talent doing Extra work in Movies? Have you ever been an Extra?
Jen: I think extra work is a wonderful way to break into the acting world. You will have the opportunity to meet some amazing connections. In fact, I got my SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) card through doing Extra work.
Dawn: I want to know how you met Mark from Performing Artist Promotions?
Jen: I met Mark at the same year's World Championships of Performing Arts where I met you. I had a booth there for the release of our "Body Art" video and had the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting entertainment business connections.
Dawn: Anything from the Heart you would like to say? Maybe a Quote?
Jen: "With ordinary talent and extraordinary perseverance, all things are attainable" (Thomas E. Buxton). I think this quote sums up my Point of View regarding every aspect of Entertainment.
Dawn: Thank you, Jennifer. I look forward to seeing you at the Pre-Grammy Party.
Jen: Yes, it sounds very exciting, Dawn.
Dawn: Until next time, this is Dawn Reese. Reporting from Dawn 'til Dusk, simply because that's me! That's why I call myself The Winning Edge. Pageant Gals really need to bring Headshots and Demos to Pageants. Not leave them at home. This is so Important. If anyone is interested in the Demo Tape of the World Championships of Performing Arts, send $5 for postage. I can send it to you, and you will see this Awesome Event in Hollywood, California. Send $5 to: Winning Edge, P.O. Box 33722, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, 33420
